In 1968, Mr. Paul Sand from The American School of The Hague organised the first Model United Nations in The Hague. In 1981 the THIMUN Foundation was established and is today directed by a Board of Directors consisting of teachers from international and Dutch schools.  The THIMUN office in The Hague is permanently staffed.

In 1995 the THIMUN Foundation was accredited as a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) associated with the United Nations Department of Public Information. 2001 saw the first annual session of the THIMUN Youth Assembly. In 2003 the THIMUN Foundation was granted Roster Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

Secretary General Kofi Annan, who visited THIMUN in 2002, stated:  "The fact that THIMUN exists to uphold the values of the United Nations among the young is particularly important, since it is from the young that we should draw our energy and inspiration as we strive to make the United Nations effective and responsive to the needs of the people worldwide."

The Thimun Qatar Conference is one of only three THIMUN conferences worldwide. A full-time THIMUN office is located at Qatar Academy and staffed by THIMUN Qatar director Cameron Janzen and coordinator Ann Rogers.

THIMUN Qatar also co-hosts the THIMUN Qatar Film Festival each year. The event was created to encourage students to advocate for change in the world using a media that could potentially reach a large, international audience via the Internet and You Tube, in particular.

The three-day festival includes workshops for student directors and a 24-hour team challenge, wherein participants will compete to develop the best short film over the course of one full day. The festival will culminate with an Oscar-style Gala Awards Ceremony where judges will reveal the winners for Best Poster, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Sound, Best Story, and Best Picture. View the 2012 entries on the Film Festival YouTube channel.
