Guidance & Counselling
The Academy counselors work directly with students supporting them through their academic life to foster, promote, and improve their success and achievement.
The Primary School Counseling department believes that sound education involves the development of the whole student. This includes the social, emotional, intellectual, and physical aspects of a student's life. Counseling services are accessible to all students and their families.
The Primary School program strives to provide continuity of services from preschool through grade 5. Counselors provide support to students, teachers and parents through both individual contact and group meetings. In the Primary School, counselors facilitate the PYP attitudes and social and emotional competencies through classroom contact and individual counseling. Counselors meet with students individually and in small groups to enhance social skills and self esteem. Parenting workshops are offered and counselors are available to meet with parents on an individual basis. For those students who require support services, primary school counselors along with other support services and administration facilitate the Child Study Team (CST) process where student needs are discussed and an action plan is created.
The Senior School's Counselors ensure that all students in grades 6 through 12 receive support in academic, career, and personal-social development. We collaborate as a team of counselors, teachers, students, and administrators to foster and improve student success and achievement. We assist our students and their families in transition to our school community. Special programs help foster happy and successful learners. Some of these programs include:
- New Student Orientation focused on making our newcomers feel welcome and prepared before the beginning of the school year.
- Academic Counseling designed to help students and parents acquire knowledge of curricular choices, plan a program of studies, and interpret academic opportunities.
- Career Counseling helps students acquire information and plan for appropriate education and training for career choices.
- Personal/Social Counseling assists students in developing an understanding of themselves and to respect the rights and needs of others.
- Individual Counseling helps with personal difficulties which impede personal growth and happiness as well as academic success.
- Peer Helper Program trains students in problem solving, decision making, and conflict resolution skills to help their peers.
- TRIBES an affective development program designed to help our students and staff to build a productive learning community.
- Academic Support Programs support students with extra help and strategies to improve academic performance in the areas of math, science, and English.
- Small Group Sessions focused on particular areas of need of our students, such as time management, study skills, and social development.
- Support Center designed to record student behavior and to promote student and teacher understanding and communication.
