Dear Qatar Academy Doha Community,

It gives me great pleasure, as the Acting Director of Qatar Academy Doha, to welcome you to our new and improved website. As you browse through our pages, you will find information that I hope will generate significant interest. You will learn about the school's history and development; the mission and vision; the broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum; the  details of the school’s structure; the calendar of events; the academic and extracurricular activities that we offer to students.

Qatar Academy Doha, founded in 1996, provides an exciting and enriching environment for our 1800 learners. Through the implementation of our new strategic plan, we focus our efforts on three pillars: Students, Teaching and Learning, and Community. We are confident that our students will live our vision while on their journey through Qatar Academy Doha and into their adult lives.  Our approach to teaching and learning is guided by a respect for individual differences, by recognizing each student’s inherent capacity for growth and by creating learning situations that provide plenty of opportunity for student success. We strive for the highest academic standards by offering the International Baccalaureate Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma programmes. Our students find balance through their active participation in any one of the numerous after school activities and clubs, athletics, artistic and service learning opportunities.

We believe that diversity defines us, not divides us. Faces from diverse cultures collaborate each day in teaching and learning and in co-curricular activities, in order to promote cultural understanding and respect. Qatar Academy Doha encourages all students to reach their fullest potential, both inside and outside the classroom, so that its graduates can become self-reliant adults, able to function responsibly and successfully in a complex, rapidly changing world.

Mission Statement

Qatar Academy offers a rigorous program encompassing an international English-medium education, Arabic and Islamic studies. Governance

Qatar Academy is part of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development. Chaired by Her Highness Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned, Qatar Foundation is governed by the Executive Board of Directors, which serve as the governing authority that appoints the Board of Advisers for Qatar Academy.

The Board and the school's senior administrators meet monthly throughout the school year to deal with major management issues and to affirm its commitment to provide the highest possible standard of education to its students.

Dr. Ahmed K. Elmagarmid 

Dr. Ahmed K. Elmagarmid
Executive Director, Qatar Computing Research Institute 

Dr. Elmagarmid is the Executive Director of Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI), a national research institute under Hamad bin Khalifa University, a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development. Since his appointment in 2010, Dr. Elmagarmid has driven the Institute’s vision to bring positive impact to citizens and society by focusing on large-scale computing challenges that address national priorities for growth and development. 

Before joining Qatar Foundation, Dr. Elmagarmid held a number of prestigious posts in academia and industry. He has held faculty positions at Pennsylvania State University, the University of Padova, and Purdue University, where he had been actively involved in teaching and research for 25 years. 

Dr. Elmagarmid served as a chief scientist in HP’s Office of Strategy and Technology and has worked with or consulted for Telcordia Technology, Bellcore, IBM, CSC, Harris, D. H. Brown and Associates, MCC, Bell Northern Research, Molecular Design Labs, SOGEI (Italy) and UniSql. Dr. Elmagarmid serves as the Vice Chair of the IT Executive Committee of Sidra Medical and Research Centre and is on the board of directors of Meeza. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of Kasra (formerly MENAPOST) and Qatar National Library and a member of Qatar Genome Project Committee and Sidra’s External Scientific Advisory Council. 

Dr. Elmagarmid is a recipient of the Presidential Young Investigator award from President Ronald Reagan. He is an IEEE Fellow, an ACM Fellow, and an AAAS Fellow. The University of Dayton and Ohio State University have both named him among their distinguished alumni. Dr. Elmagarmid has chaired and served on several program committees and editorial boards. 

Dr. Elmagarmid is an accomplished and well-published scientist, authoring six books and more than 180 papers, and has run several well-funded research programs. 

Dr. Elmagarmid received his B.S. in computer science from the University of Dayton (1977) and his M.S. (1981) and Ph.D (1985) from Ohio State University.

Director of Public Health Department - Ministry of Public Health – Qatar
Associate Professor of Clinical Healthcare Policy and Research - Weill Cornell Medical College - Qatar

Dr. Mohamed Bin Hamad Al Thani is Director of Public Health Department at the Ministry of Public Health since 2008. He is Associate Professor of Clinical Healthcare Policy and Research at Weill Cornell Medical College – Qatar. 

He developed programs to protect the health of individuals, families and community in Qatar. He placed a high priority in developing the first Public Health Strategy in Qatar, which will be implemented during 2017.He is continually conducting clinical research studies in the most ethical and safest manner possible to develop an integrated approach to health prevention and promotion.

Dr. Mohamed Bin Hamad Al Thani has headed number of national committees including the National Preventive Health Committee, which aims to address the many facets of transitioning from a curative to a preventive health focus and to ensure a robust preventive health governance system is in place.
Dr. Mohammed Bin Hamad Al Thani is graduated from the Faculty of Medicine – Cairo University in 1998. He completed his fellowship in Arab Board Program in Community Medicine in 2006. He gained the Fellowship from the Faculty of Public Health in London in 2010. He obtained a Master in Business Administration in 2014 from HEC Paris - France (Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales de Paris) which is a European Business School.

His other affiliations include:

Member of the National Health Care Committee – Qatar.

 

Dr. Noora Hamad Fetais
Director - KINDI Center for Computing Research, Qatar University

Dr. Noora Fetais is the Director of KINDI Center for Computing Research at Qatar University (QU). She is also an assistant professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Qatar University. Dr. Noora holds a PhD in Informatics from the University of Sussex (UK) and MSc with distinction in Object-Oriented Software Technology from the University of Brighton (UK). She is a member of the first batch of Qatar Leadership Center (Current and Future Leaders Program 2011-2013), and is currently holding various professional positions including; Vice Chair of IEEE-Qatar Section, Qatar Ambassador of Women in Data Science (WiDS) at Stanford University, among others. Dr. Noora was  the first Women to chair the Faculty Senate of Qatar University.

Dr. Noora Fetais has participated in a number of regional and international conferences and has published a number of research papers, also has lead over seven research teams funded in the field of her specialization. She was awarded the British scholarship (Chevening) and she is a member of different international professional associations such as ACM, IEEE, ASEE, and others. Dr. Noora also participated in organizing and chairing a number of sessions at different conferences and workshops at the state level and participated in judging awards to some of these conferences and competitions at different levels.


Technology

The use of technology is an important part of the curriculum and everyday life for students and teachers at Qatar Academy. It can look very different from one class to the next, but it is always used to compliment student education and teacher instruction. QAD’s E-Learning vision serves to support the mission and vision of Qatar Academy, and provides students with an opportunity to become critical and independent thinkers as they develop problem solving and organizational skills. 

The school has developed a 21st-century learning program that embeds technology throughout the curriculum and has been designed to complement essential elements of the International Baccalaureate Programme. To that end, the school has established class sets of iPads for pre-school to grade 1 and a one-to-one laptop program for grades 2 to 10. All students have access to digital portfolios as a forum to present work and reflect on their learning journeys. Additionally, students use individually assigned classroom laptops, along with Google apps, to assist their learning through research, collaboration, sharing, and presenting.

School-wide technology is supported by a wireless network that allows students to access files, emails and classroom work at any time. Qatar Academy’s IT department and E-Learning facilitators oversee state-of-the-art computer labs, mobile learning equipment, audio and video recording equipment, and an online learning management system, making QAD one of the most technologically advanced schools in the region.

Qatar Academy's  Annual Report is now available online.  As the school's 21st academic year comes to a close, the Annual Report highlights Qatar Academy's academic achievements, sports, student life, graduation and university acceptances. The magazine is a celebration of Qatar Academy's success this year.
